Didn't you have the flu, Syril? I think you can be forgiven for not spending time and energy on a forum roleplay, in that case. I'm happy you were able to post as much as you did!
I did have the flu, and it was tech/show week for a show I was directing, but I still probably should have at least tried to defeat my opponent.

Must what goes up always come down?

Hesitancy had been the watchword, from the moment the Third Amathæan Umbra Rumble commenced.

On one side of the arena, The Watcher's echoing threat as he disappeared had set the Sole Spectator's hair on end, but Lamorak stood unfazed, firing back boastfully and defiantly as he raised his shimmering shields.

Meanwhile, the three deimons of the Rumble Royale had been engaged in a sort of tense standoff of their own. Arwynn had wasted no time in rushing straight for Pinch, who stood his ground, vibrating with pent-up fury or sonic energy (the Spectator couldn't tell which). As for Gimbyre, she had been able to make him out on the far side of the arena, apparently in discussion with Jimothy and...

Is that REIKTAN?! What is she doing here?

"Is that REIKTAN?! What is she doing here?"

The Sole Spectator glances over at the Deimon Master, startled at his words echoing her own thoughts, but he seemed not to be paying her any attention at the moment. He had stood up from his throne, anger twisting his features, along with...

...worry? No, that couldn't be...

The Deimon Master takes a hurried deep breath, trying to regain his composure, then turns toward the Sole Spectator. "I apologize for my outburst. Nothing to be concerned about. Summoner Pantsworthy, however, should not have been able to... pardon me, he was not allowed to summon any deimons apart from Gimbyre during this Rumble. Please excuse me while I address the situation." With that, the Deimon Master turns on his feet towards the wall from which they entered, his billowing cloak brushing against the Sole Spectator as he turns. A few long, quick strides, and he disappears within the rippling marble surface, leaving her to wonder just what had brought that troubling note of worry to his face.

By the time she turns around to see what's going on in the arena, the distant figure of the Deimon Master is already standing next to Jimothy near the farthest eagle pillar, shouting words too faintly to make out while pointing aggressively up at Reiktan. Unaware of this unusual disturbance, Arwynn circles Pinch, ears flattened, as an entirely orange Gimbyre circles them both, waiting for an opening.

Suddenly, a ringing clang reverberates throughout the marble arena. The Sole Spectator shifts her attention back to the right side of the arena, where The Watcher's darkly shining blade had just been deflected by Lamorak's brightly polished armor. Grasping both ends of the blade in his shielded hands, Lamorak disarms The Watcher in the blink of an eye, then proceeds to hold him at swordpoint.

These humanshape deimons seem oddly reluctant to kill each other... do they have a conscience? I wonder...

However, not a moment passes before The Watcher melts back into the shadows, disappearing before Lamorak's very eyes. Lamorak quickly adapts, raising his sword of darkness and shield of light in a defensive stance and scanning the environment for any sign of his foe.

As the Deimon Deathmatch returns to a stalemate, the Sole Spectator focuses again on the Deimon Master and Jimothy arguing in the background. Reiktan still hovers over the far end of the arena, casting an ultraviolet glow over the moonlit marble. Finally, the wind changes, and she can make out some of the Deimon Master's shouting being carried on the breeze:

"It doesn't matter if she simply watches! Her mere presence puts us all at serious risk! You MUST dismiss her IMMEDIATELY!" A pause, heated words from Jimothy, and then, "That was an entirely different situation! There are powers at work here of which you have no INKLING—"

Everything happens in an instant.

A deafening sonic blast erupts from Pinch on the left side of the arena, which Arwynn leaps over with catlike reflexes in the midst of her charge. In the same instant, Lamorak doubles over in pain on the other side of the arena, seemingly out of nowhere. A shuddering crack echoes through the arena as Pinch's sonic boom collides with one of the nearby eagle pillars, sending marble dust and shards flying everywhere, and the distant cloaked figure of the Deimon Master drops to his hands and knees, shuddering.

The Sole Spectator barely has time to process all this, ears ringing loudly, before Arwynn leaps back into action, jaws wide open, trying to clamp them shut around Pinch's head. Pinch is ready for her, however, sending a click directly into the marble beneath himself just before Arwynn connects. The resulting sonic blast shakes the entire arena, launching Pinch backwards at an arc, while the ricochet catches Arwynn mid-leap and knocks her out cold. At that moment, a metallic thud can be heard from across the arena as Lamorak collapses to the marble floor. The Watcher materializes in the shadow of a nearby pillar, watching with glowing white eyes as blood seeps through the gaps in Lamorak's armor.

Val and The Watcher have little time to celebrate their victory, however. The arena continues to shake and groan after Pinch's ricochet rocket click, and to the Sole Spectator's horror, the Deimon Master cries out in pain, clutching his face. Jimothy turns away from the battle upon hearing the Deimon Master's cry, rushing to help him. He fails to notice as the tremors crack apart a fissure in the damaged pillar, causing it to split diagonally near the base, wobble for a moment, then topple directly onto the unfortunate Gimbyre, crushing him instantly.

The rumble within the arena grows stronger moment by moment, as does the Deimon Master's screaming. Without thinking, the Sole Spectator leaps from her throne down to the arena floor, landing heavily and stumbling due to the violent tremors. Regaining her footing, she races wobbily across the arena towards the Deimon Master, joining the throng of five summoners who were now circling him, unsure of what to do. Large cracks were beginning to open up all over the arena's surface; the upraised arm of the statue in the center splits off at the elbow, falling to the floor and shattering into pieces seconds after the Sole Spectator passes beneath.

She reaches the Deimon Master, who is now writhing on the floor, his face partially covered by his forearms as he pulls at his tousled dark hair, no longer obscured by his fallen hood, him screaming louder and louder all the while. She elbows her way past the summoners, kneels down next to the Deimon Master, grips his arms and shouts, "What's going on?! What's wrong with you? Answer me so I can help you!!"

Her firm grip on the Deimon Master's arms gets his attention more than anything else. He peers at her from between his arms, eyes glowing a deep, iridescent blue, and he manages to croak out, "My cane... take us... safe place... hidden... HURRY!!"

Confused, she casts her gaze about for the Deimon Master's moon-capped cane, and quickly spots it rolling back and forth along with the tremors on the floor nearby. She lunges for it and grabs it, then realizes she has no idea how to actually use it. She wracks her brain, trying to remember how the Deimon Master did it. She had seen him use it to open a gate with a tap, snuff out a raging inferno with a wave, and turn solid surfaces into opaque portals with the silver moon tip, but how?

I'm no magician! How am I supposed to use this thing?! Doubt and fear fills her mind, clouding her thoughts, inviting despair. She reflexively pushes the despair away, and, with remarkable self-control, takes a mental step back from her doubt and fear, examining them in a detached sort of way.

Hadn't the Deimon Master mentioned something about doubt and fear...? His words echo again in her mind:

“Man’s ambitions may reach the skies, but the curiosity that fuels magic transcends the heavens themselves. Tap into that curiosity. Let it well up within you. Let it expand to fill every hidden nook and cranny within your mind. Let it displace all doubt and fear of the unknown..."

The Sole Spectator takes a deep breath and tries to focus solely on her curiosity towards magic, while her world slowly crumbles around her. She thinks about all of the unbelievable, impossible things she had seen. What made them all work? Why did reality turn a blind eye to these deimons, to their summoners, to the Deimon Master himself? She could scarcely begin to imagine why, but the answer doesn't matter to her at the moment. All that matters to her is the question. She asks it over and over in her mind, louder and more forceful each time:

What is magic? What is magic? What is magic?

Images flood her head every time she asks herself, growing clearer, more defined, more real with each passing moment. She imagines herself, the Deimon Master, and the five summoners all safe and sound in her rich friend's Penn Visla penthouse. As she holds that image within her mind's eye, she notices the silver moon on top of the Deimon Master's cane glowing brighter and brighter. Without an ounce of doubt, or fear of what might happen next, she taps the crescent moon's point to the quaking marble floor beneath her.

____

The next thing she knew, she was falling.

THUD! THUD-THUD-THUD-THUD-THUD! THUD!

Before she knew it, she had collided with a hard wooden floor, along with the five summoners and the Deimon Master, whose screaming had ceased immediately upon impact. Slightly dazed and winded, she pushes herself off the floor and looks around. She sees the familiar opulent furnishings of her friend's penthouse apartment, in which the seven of them had been staying for weeks in between shifts at the Penn Visla Monument.

It worked...

She pushes herself up off the floor, using the Deimon Master's cane for support, and immediately rushes to the Deimon Master's side. She checks to make sure he's still breathing, and is relieved to find that he is merely unconscious, likely due to the impact of his head on the hardwood floor.

Her relief is short-lived, however.

B O O O O O O O M

The entire penthouse shakes, knocking pretentious art pieces off their wall hangings, toppling an expensive-looking vase, and leaving a sick feeling in the Sole Spectator's gut. She had an idea what that noise was...

Getting to her feet, she walks over to one of the ceiling-high windows and looks out towards the Penn Visla Monument, a view which had become imprinted in her memory over the past several weeks. A huge cloud of dust rises up from a massive crater where the monument used to be, now buried underneath tons of crushed marble.

"Plummeting moons, my head..." The Deimon Master groans behind her, sitting up and rubbing the back of his head. He looks around at their surroundings, and says groggily, "The old hideout, eh? Good choice, although we're lucky this building is built for earthquakes. I see you're already admiring my latest handiwork— OW!" The Deimon Master rubs the top of his head, where the Sole Spectator had just drubbed him with his own cane. "What was that for?!"

"That's for making jokes about destroying another historical landmark. What if someone was underneath that thing when it fell, you absolute ass?!"

"Your concern for your fellow man is touching," he says, with enough sincerity that the Sole Spectator almost believes he means it. "I assure you, I took every precaution to vacate the area tonight, and keep it that way. It wouldn't do to have someone watching while I revealed myself to you, now, would it?"

"Alright. That makes sense." Suddenly, she lashes out again with the cane, smacking the Deimon Master in the stomach with the length of the handle.

"OOF! Now what?!"

"That's for nearly getting us all killed. What the hell happened up there??"

Rubbing his head and patting his stomach, the Deimon Master replies coyly, "I'm afraid I can't say. A magician never reveals his tricks, don't you know?"

She raises his cane, ready to smack him again. "Tell me what happened, or I'm done. No more 'carrying the torch' nonsense. And because I'll keep hitting you until you tell me."

"Hell hath no fury... very well. But first, allow me to formally conclude this Umbra Rumble."

To be continued during Umbra Rumble IV...

Indeed! Also, since this affects all summoners, I'm gonna go ahead and re-post this snippet from a conversation I just had:

Avidro said:
Tell you what: feel free to post any sort of narrative description you want about [your summoner and deimons], whether or not the Battle Phase is currently active, and I'll try my best to work it into the story. I reserve the right to choose what will and won't be canon, just like in the Rumbles themselves. Also, I won't reply in-character except during the Setup and Judgment Phases, like I've been doing. You can attempt to interact with the Deimon Master or one of the other NPCs if you like, but don't expect a back-and-forth exchange. Otherwise, feel free to roleplay with the other summoners for fun in between Rumbles. The more material I have to work with, the merrier! :geek:
In other words, I'm opening the floodgates on roleplaying posts outside of the Battle Phases themselves. As mentioned, I have the final say on what makes it into the actual narrative. With that in mind, feel free to roleplay to your heart's content!

(Also, this seems like a good time to link back to Smiley's Cresnovian RP thread, Contracts and Conferences, in case y'all want to roleplay specifically about your deimons back in Cresnov.)

Elliot didn't care too badly that Arwynn lost her battle, especially since she was perfectly fine. However, he was paying quite a bit off attention to the sole spectator, yet he still had a single question in mind:

"What the hell just happened? Why can't I-- Reiktan? Where are you? Where are we?"

Jimothy was upset. First he and Gimbyre had horrendously thrown the Rumble, and now he was facedown on an unfamiliar floor, with no idea of his surroundings. He cast his thoughts outward.

"Reiktan! Where are you? Where are we? What was that B O O O O O O O M ing sound?"

Calm down, I'm fine. I'm back at the arena. It just sorta' collapsed and you all disappeared without a trace. Gimbyre's awfully peeved. Honestly, relax.

Jimothy's expression tightened, and his brow furrowed in frustration.

"Seriously? Penn Visla Monument is probably buried in rubble, my second combat summonee was almost killed, and I have no idea where I am! How can I possibly relax?"

Well, if I had to guess, I'd say to start by finding out if anyone was injured in the collapse, apologizing to Gimbyre, and figuring out where you are. Did I miss anything?

"That's--"
"..."
"...touché. Just... find me soon. I don't like being kept in the dark like this."

...

"Just some more blind person humor for you."

I got it. It just wasn't funny.

"Ah, well. Can't win 'em all. I'll see you soon!"

Just stop.

"Never gonna happen."

Jimothy sighed aloud, and resignedly pushed himself up onto his knees. He could hear the movement of the other summoners, and turned to face what seemed to be the majority of the sound.

"Can someone help me up? And maybe explain what the hell just happened?"

Alya had been busy. She was holed up in her room for weeks researching, so preoccupied that she somehow missed the recent events entirely. Some supreme summoner she had been. She did notice however the massive earthquake and as she ran downstairs and out of her messy apartment a slightly beat up flier caught her eye. If there were wanted posters of the Deimon Master and another "natural" disaster
Plummeting Moons! I should probably go find them shouldn't I
Like an idiot she ran directly to the collapsed monument. No sign of them anywhere, only rubble and small aftershocks.
Definitely a rumble she whispered under her breath
If only she knew where to look...

The Creation Phase has begun!

Submit your deimons to Deimon Master Avidro using the Conversation feature!

Remember, deimons must have the following traits to be approved:
  • Animal shape
  • Umbration
  • One (1) magic talent
  • Name
Feel free to add a personality, physical description, backstory, or any other extra information.

I would love to give constructive criticism, but as Deimon Master, my role is simply to facilitate your own efforts at defining each umbra. If I imposed my own ideas on how the umbras work, it would only serve to stifle your creativity. As long as I can see the logic behind a particular talent deriving from a particular umbration, you'll get my approval on that front. If the logic is fuzzy or hard to understand, I may ask for clarification on the link between the talent and umbration before I approve it.

In other words, if your goal is to get a better idea of how Cresnovians understand the umbras, I can't help you. If your goal is to get a better idea of the possibilities each umbration holds, from our own limited Amathæan perspective, then I would recommend submitting deimons that, in your view, push the boundaries of what might be possible through a given umbration. You might surprise yourself!

Phase 2 begins Sunday, February 10th, 2019 at 7:00 PM CST.

Syril Dawntreader woke up. He had fallen asleep on his feet and was not sure what was going on. He noticed Jimothy on the ground, and pulled him to his feet.

He reached out in his mind to Lamorak and felt nothing.

"Anyone cares to explain... what the hell just happened ?"
The Deimon Master stifles a laugh as three different summoners voice a variation of the exact same question at the exact same moment. “I suppose this was inevitable,” he says, with a smirk on his face. “After all, if I had been touting curiosity as one of the defining traits of summoners, I shouldn’t be surprised when they start demanding answers!”

Holding out one hand, palm upward, he snaps with his other hand. In the blink of an eye, his cane disappears from the Sole Spectator’s raised arms and reappears in his open right hand. “What the – HEY!!” she yells with a start. “That right there, explain that! How did you do that without the cane? For that matter, how did I do magic with the cane? None of this makes any sense!”

“Rest assured, it makes little sense even if you do know how it all works,” replies the Deimon Master. “What’s more, I’m afraid I literally can’t explain the precise mechanism by which I perform my little tricks. You are all familiar with Cognizance magic, yes?”

He looks around the room, getting a mixture of nods and dazed looks. He continues, “In order to keep the secret of my powers safe from those who would misuse it, I have voluntarily bound myself with a Cognizance curse. I am magically incapable of intentionally revealing the source of my powers. In fact, I am incapable of even thinking about the source of my powers in all but the vaguest terms, to prevent access by telepaths or the like.”

“Gee, doesn’t that seem awfully convenient? And what, we’re just supposed to take your word for it?” the Sole Spectator fires back, her arms crossed.

“You raise a good point, friend. Perhaps if one of our fellow guests would be so kind as to put my claims to the test…?” He turns and looks expectantly at the crowd of summoners.

“What say you, summoners? Can any of you summon a deimon with which to try and wrest the secret from my mind? No pressure, of course. Feel free to take all the time you need to prepare. Unfortunately, I’m afraid our time together here has run out.” As soon as these words leave his mouth, everyone present hears the apartment door being unlocked. “Farewell for now, friends! Bonne nuit, et bonne chance!”

A wink, a tap of the cane, and the Deimon Master disappears into the floor along with each of the summoners present, leaving the Sole Spectator alone with one burning question on her mind. As the apartment door opens to admit her five missing friends, she yells in frustration:

“WHAT THE HELL JUST HAPPENED?!”
