This September, join forces with your fellow readers to enhance the TV Tropes page for Exvulnerum!

:normanheadscratch: What is TV Tropes?
  • Per their own website: "TV Tropes is a wiki, sort of like Wikipedia but using different software and with a different purpose. We describe and collect examples of Tropes in Media. [...] A trope is a narrative device or convention used in storytelling or production of a creative work. [...] Above all, a trope is a convention. It can be a plot trick, a setup, a narrative structure, a character type, a linguistic idiom... you know it when you see it."
  • It's a great place to document and discuss works of fiction, like webcomics!
:thanksbud: Why participate?
  • This will be a semi-gamified quest with a party of different classes! It's fun!
  • The more of a presence Exvulnerum has on the TV Tropes website, the more potential readers will come our way!
  • September means SCHOOL IS IN SESSION, so get your student self warmed up (or revived!) by participating in this slightly-academic literary activity!
:wellactually: How to participate:
  • Familiarize yourself with TV Tropes by reading the Exvulnerum page and any relevant rules/tutorials you think you need. You can also search up your other favorite works/franchises and read their pages!
  • Choose a CLASS. This activity will be divided into a few parts, and each CLASS has its own role to play. Clearly state your CLASS once chosen.
  • On September 1st, get to work on your assignment!
:haveanicecream: Will there be prizes?
  • Since this is a cooperative team activity, everyone will get access to the end reward: A ~15 minute video where I discuss some or all of the tropes that were added. ONLY participants will gain access to this video, so you'll have something special. You will also receive digital participation badges you can put in your signature!
THE CLASSES
Please choose a CLASS to participate (there may be more than 1 person per class, but we do need 1 of each to get the project going) :
  • THE HYPEPERSON
    • Difficulty: ⭐
    • Hypepeople are the ones who encourage all of the other participants to continue working on this project. They bump this thread with a new post when the project goes cold, cheer on any posted activity, and congratulate and compliment the work generated. They are the cheerleaders who fuel this endeavor.
      • This class is great for: friendly people; outgoing people; people who want to participate but don't have much time or mental bandwidth to put in lots of work
      • How to prepare for this role: no prep needed, just post in this thread early and often! (It's okay to double-post as long as you don't get carried away.)
  • THE TROPEWRANGLER
    • Difficulty: ⭐⭐
    • Tropewranglers are tasked with hunting down potential tropes that fit the story of Exvulnerum. They will probably use the "Random Trope" button on the TV Tropes home page (blue button at top) to find new ones, or they will search the website for tropes they already have in mind. Then they will post the tropes in this thread: either 1 at a time or in batches. They may post tropes they are uncertain about, and some of their posted tropes may be deemed too irrelevant or off-the-mark to expand on. What's important is that they keep the ideas coming. To make this activity easier, they will only suggest tropes that already have a page on TV Tropes.
      • This class is great for: people who love brainstorming; people familiar with Exvulnerum's plot
      • How to prepare for this role: reread some or all of the comic.
  • THE QUILLDRIVER
    • Difficulty: ⭐⭐⭐
    • Quilldrivers take tropes posted by tropewranglers and write out how the trope connects to the story of Exvulnerum. These blurbs shouldn't be very long, but they should contain relevant links to the referenced Exvulnerum pages or chapters (unless the connection is a general idea that is hard to link to). If a trope has multiple examples in the comic, they will list the most important ones. They will only write for tropes they agree have a clear connection to the story of Exvulnerum and can be clearly described.
      • This class is great for: writers; comedians; people who love analyzing works of fiction
      • How to prepare for this role: read various pages on TV Tropes so that you get a feel for the style of content used there
  • THE WIKIWIZARD
    • Difficulty: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
    • Wikiwizards are the ones who take the content generated by the quilldrivers and format it so that it can go onto a TV Tropes page--they then edit the work onto the wiki so that it's published. They have familiarized themselves with TV Tropes's rules and guidelines and are committed to following them. Wikiwizards focus on both adding entries to the Exvulnerum main page and also the relevant trope's page so that it can link back to Exvulnerum's page. They are mindful of which tropes are objectively true and which ones are more controversial and subjective and should go on the Your Mileage May Vary page.
      • This class is great for: orderly, lawful people; people who love seeing a project come together; people familiar with wikis or TV Tropes
      • How to prepare for this role: create an account on TV Tropes and read through all necessary guidelines
YOU MAY DISAGREE:
The quilldriver may not agree with every trope the tropewrangler is excited about. The wikiwizard may not think that what the quilldriver composed is fit to go on the wiki. When disagreements arise, instead of taking matters into your own hands, remember that this is a team effort. Bring up your reasoning for ignoring or wanting to edit the work of your teammates. Your teammate should respond with their own reasoning, and try to come to a resolution. Also, if you're unsure about anything, open discussion here is encouraged! Feel free to ask for the opinions of others!

MULTICLASSING:
Multiclassing is currently OFF, but may be turned ON if we don't have enough participants. Until then, try to stay within the role you choose unless you're specifically asked for help.

THIS CHALLENGE ENDS: (Wake me up) when September ends. I guess we don't have to be all weird about timezones or whatever.

Special thanks: To @Smiley100P for creating the TV Tropes page way back in 2018

Sounds like role 1 fits me the best, but I'm happy to see what's needed and try to pick something up as we go.

I’ll be a tropewrangler, it seems fun. I’ll also use this as an excuse to learn about some interesting tropes myself.

I definitely won't have the time not mental bandwidth to allocate to this project, but I'll be happy to be a fellow hypeperson if need be!

I did a quick look at the challenge description.
Later I will read and think more carefully if I want to join and if yes then in which role.
Not an easy decision.
Anyway, a quick look is a good opportunity for misreading something.
So at first I read "hypeperson" as "hyperperson".
So, like a person BUT MORE.
Take what defines a person and amplify every aspect of it.

I mean, it wouldn't be terrible if a hypeperson was a hyper person.

The Hypepeople are already hyping people!! Nice. And there's only 2 roles to fill before we have a full party!

I also plan to promote this thread on the next Exvulnerum update, so hopefully we can trick a new member into joining like we tricked B with the last forum activity.

Pre-season practice. You can't expect to be at your best when the games that matter start if you haven't practiced in pre-season.

Maybe with some wrangled tropes, a potential quilldriver will get inspired and step forward!
That's what I'm hoping as well!

Who would make a good quilldriver? 🤔 I have a few people in mind, but do they have time and interest in joining??

TIME TO DEFY ZULES' EXPECTATIONS AND JOIN AS A HYPEPERSON /s
For realsies though I've been debating on whether I want to participate or not. The main issue is that I'll be essentially out of commission for the latter half of the month as I receive and subsequently recover from surgery starting the 14th.
The good news is I'll probably have recovered enough in time for me to absolutely crush everyone during the Readathon, if it happens this year.

(Side note: Zules' post that I replied to is post 50501! Not quite a magic number, but close.)
