I'm a Lumen

Hey there! I go by Lumen, and I finished Exvulnerum relatively recently. I gotta say, I super enjoyed it! I'm a big fan of stories that utilize mood whiplash well, and I'm also a pretty big fan of the art style, very good faces, and delightfully shiny in places. I'm not good at talking about things I like really, kinda hard to find ways to contribute that haven't been said already, but I hope we can be friends anyways.

about me? Uh... Well, I'm a published author, and I have no idea what this forum's rules on plugging your own stuff are so I'll keep on the down low until I do, and I work from home writing most of the time trying to get more books out there. I'm disabled, and live with a roommate who helps me out with stuff that I can't easily do cause of it. He's going to school to become a personal support worker soon, so it's good practice for him. I also have three absolutely lovely cats, who I will show pictures of at any opportunity. Oh, and my biggest hobby (other than reading webcomics) is collecting Digimon virtual pets! I have an awful sense of time, so I use them beeping at me to feed them to keep track of it better.

I write a book series called Other London, it's a middle-grade urban fantasy about an alternate history where magic and interdimensional travel have been normal on Earth since the 70s, and in the relatively boring town of London, Ontario, Canada, a teenage girl influenced by magical girl anime and TV tropes becomes a wizard's apprentice and stumbles into the role of Legendary Hero/magical tech support for her hometown.
It's pretty character-focused, largely about interesting people with cool magical powers getting up to shenanigans and bickering, and thematically a lot about mental health, coming of age stuff, and how the real world sometimes works like stories and sometimes doesn't. It also takes place in my hometown, and I pull from a lot of real places around Ontario when writing it.
You can read more about it at it's website here and the publisher's website here. The first book has been out since 2020, and while it hasn't been formally announced yet the second book will be out later this year. I write it under my legal name, Erynn Q.

I feel you on the coffee thing! I can walk short distances and take care of myself usually, but I have pretty severe tremors and underdeveloped motor skills, so while I could get myself a coffee before my roommate got here, the amount of time it spilled or broke a cup or made some kind of mess was pretty discouraging.

I'll definitely post some kitties there. One of them is actually represented as a talking fairy cat in the book!

No actually! I read through about half of Exvulnerum maybe a year ago and then lost the link, couldn't remember the name. It was actually an ad on the comic Leif and Thorn that brought me back.

What's the story behind your user title, if I may ask?

There was a large joke in high school that I was secretly the apocalypse maiden of the worst doomsday prophecy sent to decide the fate of the world, the kind of elaborate thing that tends to come up among fantasy-loving teenagers. It was pretty heavily inspired by my love of Super Paper Mario and its grand apocalypse plot. I used to use it on forums as a teen, and felt a little nostalgic being on a forum now so I set it here. Usually, my title on the internet nowadays is "An author who can eat more breadsticks than you" which I might change to later.

Thank you! I understand the backlog thing haha if it makes you feel any better it is pretty short, it's only about 35000 words/200ish pages.

I wanted to know actually, whats the deal with the umbrations on people's profiles? is their info somewhere on what they mean for picking, or some kind of test?

You can choose whichever one you like and for whatever reason, and you can set it in your account details ^^

red brick, it's pretty common around here but it always impresses my friends and family from out west since they don't have it as much there.

I started saying "I'm a Lumen" occasionally when people addressed me or referred to me when I started going by "Lumen," in an effort to drill it in that it was my name lol It's also led to some.... Dumb jokes when friends have played games where you can make multiple characters....
