Friday was publication day, and I've honestly been so exhausted with promoting the book, trying to figure out in stock/out of stock issues, and trying to track other metrics alongside keeping 3x updates going with chapter 21 that I barely have any leftover energy to make a coherent post here about it, lol
The big downer right now is that Amazon US accepted preorders right up until release day, then on release day they suddenly decided to list it as "out of stock" with no ability to order a copy -- even though it's print on demand, so how they're handling it is kind of puzzling to me. I put in a ticket about it with their support team, and my printer also put in a ticket, so hopefully it'll get resolved soon. As of today, it's available for purchase from a 3rd party seller for a really high markup
AFAIK all of the preorders will get fulfilled just fine, but their timeline is unclear. I still can't even see a report on how many preorder copies were sold.
This might be my fault for setting the publication date too soon after enabling distribution
You know, I thought it would be okay though since Amazon--not me--decided to take preorders right away. My printer/distributor seems to think the Amazon issue will sort itself out in a few weeks. It just kind of threw my plans for a loop since I was going to use Amazon as my main retail recommendation.
Meanwhile, other retailers seem to be handling things better. Barnes & Noble finally got the cover uploaded onto their listing of the brick, although the description is still missing. But the B&N preorders have already shipped, which is awesome!!! It's also for sale on bookshop.org, thriftbooks, alibris for retail price + shipping, and Blackwells for a $5 higher price but apparently free shipping. It might be on sale elsewhere too but those are the main ones I'm aware of. (For the US market at least. Internationally, things are probably in a similar boat, just with different retailers? I'm not sure.)
I didn't quite realize how complicated this venture would be, selling via retailers I have no control over
I can also operate as a point of sale by buying my own inventory and setting up an online store/shipping bricks myself, but it's just not really feasible for me right now, so this is where things stand.
Let me tell you, though, I've sure learned a lot, and I'm excited to continue my journey as a brand new indie publisher!
